If I choose a water retailer based in Scotland after the market opens, will I be able to move away from them if I don’t use 50 million litres of water a year?
There are currently no restrictions on water usage for businesses in Scotland supplied by Scottish water companies and this will remain the case if they supply English businesses after the market opens in April 2017.
My water supplier is based in Wales but my premises are in England. Can I switch suppliers from April 2017?
Unless the premises belonging to your organisation uses more than 50 million litres of water per year (your water bill will show usage), at this moment in time you are not able to change your supplier.
As it currently stands, businesses, charities and public sector customers who are supplied by a water company based wholly or mainly in Wales (by geographic size), will not be able to change their supplier post deregulation unless they use more than 50 million litres of water per year. This is because the Welsh Government has decided to adopt a different approach to England and Welsh legislation stipulates that only those non-household businesses who use in excess of 50 million litres per year can move away from their Welsh water company.
This position may change in the future if the Silk Commission recommendations are accepted and water company boundaries are aligned with national borders.
